24 hours in Kenya

My stay in Kenya was brief. About 24 hours in total.

Today we crossed the border into Tanzania. The day was spent driving from Nairobe to Arusha where are camped up for a couple of nights, then off on safari – eeekkk.

Most of the drive time was spent getting to know fellow passangers. These lot are a much more subdued bunch than the Middle Eastern Oasis passengers, and on the whole much younger. I reckon I’m probably one of the eldest on this truck….

There are no massive personalities competiting for attention, the majority of the truck is female and most of the only lads are accompained by wives or girlfriends. So we won’t be seeing the tent buddy swapping of the Middle Eastern kind!

It also doesn’ feel like the tent buddy dance is happening on this truck. Last time it seemed evident that during the first day’s drive people were sizing each other up to figure out who may be potential billet companions. In the Middle East before the trip had even started I had decided there were two people I definately didn’t want to share with. On that occasion I came up trumps in the billet buddy stakes by not saying too much until the final moments. I’ll shall see if it works again.

Luckily this time there is no one I couldn’t face sharing with. But there is an odd number of us, and I am one of only three not going all the way to Cape Town (the other two are a couple).

I began writing this post sat at the border yesterday. We have sinced arrived and set up camp for the first time. The tents are much more spacious than the ones we had before. And my ploy of hanging back when all the tent buddy arrangements were being made did score me my own tent for the trip – result. Although I have to admit there was a bit of a being the last to be picked for the sports team feeling about it!

So now I am sat in Arusha waiting to go on safari tomorrow.
